George Oliver Hays, 95, passed away Friday, February 20, 2026, at Country Meadow Personal Care Home in Greenwood, Mississippi. Graveside services are 11 A.M. Monday, March 2, at the North MS Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Kilmichael with Rev. Dustin Long officiating. Visitation is Sunday March 1 from 4-6 P.M. at Greenwood Delta Funeral Home.
George was born September 25,1930, in Cleveland, Mississippi to George F. and Tommie Lee Hays. He attended Webb High School and Northwest Community college. He received a Bachelors of Science Degree from Mississippi State University, in 1954. He served in the United States Army for 8 years from 1954 to 1962. He worked for 28 years as an engineering technician for the Mississippi State Highway Department. In 1971, he completed a correspondence course from the American School of Piano Tuning and subsequently became well know as the “piano tuner” in the delta and surrounding areas for more than 45 years. He was a member of the Carroll County Lions Club, Gideons International, Carroll County Dulcimer Club, and American Legion Post 29 of Greenwood, He was a faithful member of Carrollton Baptist Church and loved serving there in various capacities, including deacon, choir member, soloist, speaker, Sunday school teacher and bible study leader. He led a bible study on the book of Revelation at the age of 94. He was always on the go with a smile on his face, and joy in his heart. He was a true inspiration to everyone who knew him.
George is survived by his daughters, Virginia Butschek (Michael), Brenda McCaleb, and Donna Bagwell (Ricky), 7 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren.
Other than his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife of 69 years, Nina Thompson Hays; a brother Franklin Hays, and sisters Doris Hannah, Helen Barefoot and Frances Brownlee.
